Rachel is a UK Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Recognised Specialist in Veterinary Behavioural Medicine, and a European Veterinary Specialist in both Veterinary Behavioural Medicine and Animal Welfare, Ethics and Law. She has a PhD in veterinary behaviour and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, awarded for meritorious contribution to knowledge in the veterinary profession. Rachel has over 100 peer reviewed publications and is an international speaker in veterinary behaviour and welfare science.

Rachel worked in academia for 18 years, mainly at Bristol Vet School, running a referral clinic and research group, before joining the UK’s largest dog charity, Dogs Trust, in 2016. As Director of Canine Behaviour and Research, she headed up a team of trainers and behaviourists working with dogs in rehoming centres and led on the development of innovative programmes aimed at preventing problems, such as Dog School. She also leads a multi-disciplinary research team with projects involving human behaviour change, epidemiology and dog behaviour. This includes Generation Pup - a cohort study investigating early life influences on a range of health and behaviour outcomes that impact on the welfare of dogs. In 2023, Rachel became Director of Strategy and Transformation, leading on the organisational strategic review, and also heading up the People teams, Data Analytics and a new Programme office.
